Oral Health: Skin of Your Teeth
Aims, Experiences, Outcomes and Benchmarks
Aims
The learning in this pack sits within the health and Wellbeing area of the Curriculum for Excellence. The particular aspect of learning in Health and Wellbeing to which the pack contributes is to: understand how what I eat, how active I am and how decisions I make about my behaviour and relationships affect my physical and mental wellbeing
Experiences and Outcomes (Physical Wellbeing)
The learning pack is designed in particular for delivery with children at the second stage of Curriculum for Excellence, so generally from P5 to P7, but earlier or later for some. The specific experiences of outcomes (and their Curriculum for Excellence “code”) are noted below:
- I am developing my understanding of the human body and can use this knowledge to maintain and improve my wellbeing and health (HWB 2-15a)
- By applying my knowledge and understanding of current healthy eating advice I can contribute to a healthy eating plan (HWB 2-30a)
- I understand that people at different life stages have differing nutritional needs and that some people may eat or avoid certain foods (HWB 2-32a)
- Having learned about cleanliness, hygiene and safety, I can apply these principles to my everyday routines, understanding their importance to health and wellbeing (HWB 2-33a)
- By investigating food labelling systems, I can begin to understand how to use them to make healthy food choices (HWB 2-36a)
Benchmarks
The learning benchmarks noted below may be of particular use to those using the pack in formal educational settings:
- Explains the proportions each food group should contribute to a healthy eating plan.
- Outlines at least three current healthy eating messages, for example, lowering salt and sugar intake.
