Consider organising a sponsored event where participants do not eat sugary food or drink for a period of time. This would include specific things like: soft drinks, chocolate and cakes. Money raised can go to a school charity or similar.

Eggsperiment 1

Refer to the video in the Resources section of the pack for further guidance on the experiment. The experiment can either be carried out by groups in class or at home. For this experiment you will need a glass, an egg, some cola, a toothbrush and toothpaste. This “eggsperiment” involves an egg being left in cola for 24 hours to show how it discolours the shell of the egg and how this needs brushing with toothpaste to remove it.

Eggsperiment 2

Refer to the video in the Resources section of the pack for further guidance on the experiment. The experiment can either be carried out by groups in class or at home. For this experiment you will need a glass, an egg and some vinegar. The “eggsperiment” involves an egg being left in cola for 48 hours to show how it makes the egg “bouncy” due to the acid in the vinegar (which also appears in fizzy drinks).

Quiz Challenge

This activity relates to the Quiz Challenge video in the Video Challenges Resources section of the pack.

This is a short but fairly challenging quiz about different aspects of oral health. It can be shown to class or other groups and will need to be paused at each question. The answers can then be used for discussion. The answers are:

  1. A and B: we should brush our teeth twice a day and after meals.
  2. Smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco are the second worst thing for our oral health.
  3. C: Sugar reacts with bacteria in the mouth to create acid that attacks the teeth
  4. B: Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum caused by a build-up of plaque.
