Smileathon Craft Challenge
Show the Smileathon Craft Challenge from the Resources section of the pack and get participants to make a Healthy Mouth and Toothbrush mask.
Teaspoons of Sugar
Give participants a cup and a bag of sugar and ask them to count out the amount of sugar from the following and add into the glass:
- A bowl of cereal – 3 teaspoons
- A small carton of low fat yoghurt – 4 teaspoons
- A large slice of carrot cake – 10 teaspoons
- A glass of chocolate milk – 3 teaspoons
- A can of coke – 10 teaspoons
- A granola bar – 6 teaspoons
- A supermarket ready meal – 10 teaspoons.
Now, take another cup and take out 10 teaspoonfuls of sugar from the first cup and put into that. This is the recommended amount of sugar we can take in a day.
DISCUSSION: What cup has the most sugar in it? How can we reduce our sugar intake?
Teaspoons of Sugar (Poster)
Make up a poster comparing the amounts of sugar in each of the following, showing these from least to most sugar content:
- A bowl of cereal – 3 teaspoons
- A small carton of low fat yoghurt – 4 teaspoons
- A large slice of carrot cake – 10 teaspoons
- A glass of chocolate milk – 3 teaspoons
- A can of coke – 10 teaspoons
- A granola bar – 6 teaspoons
- A supermarket ready meal – 10 teaspoons.
This can be done using arts and crafts materials, showing each item at the bottom and placing teaspoon pictures to show the amount of sugar in each type of food.
DISCUSSION: The recommended amount of sugar per day is about 10 teaspoonfuls. What changes to our diet could we make to reduce the amount of sugar we take?
